World Con Last Year August 2006

We stood in line for a long time and thought we wouldn't get Ray Bradbury to sign our books. But as luck would have it our numbers were called and we were the last to get Mr. Bradbury's signature on his books. Meeting Ray Bradbury was a highlight of this trip.

Camping at Cultus

I have wanted to start a writers' retreat at Cultus Lake for quite a number of years. Problem of course is finding an affordable place. If anyone has a place they'd like to offer up please let me know. Cultus is a great spot because you feel as if you're far from it all but in fact you can get back to the city in a couple of hours tops. (That's if you speed.)

Hornby's Island's Honey Beer or is it Wine?

'A drink I took of the magic mead..
Then began I to know and to be wise,
To grow and to weave poems.'
-Odin, from the Norse Saga Runahal

A neatery meadery(I've made up the word meadery) on Hornby Island. Actually it's called Middle Mountain Winery. Went there early July to wine taste and found the meadery. A rustic style cabin built over top of a modern meadery with a view of the gulf islands and beezz a buzz. I asked for the drink they'd serve if a large Viking were to walk in. I got the standard honey wine and liked it soo much I bought a bottle. Cost apprx. $20 Matt was our host. Though he didn't own the place or make the wine, he served and educated us on the making of mead. He is a chemist by trade. We also discovered Carbrea Vineyards and a third winery that wasn't open (July 15 is when it flys). Carbrea's was interesting too. Great wine. Big white dog and quaint porch with table and chairs to sit and drink your wine and look out at the vineyards that won't be producing grapes for another 3 to 5 years. They do a neat summer star watch on some evenings. Drink wine, identify your favorite constellation and listen to music. Divine wine! Google these grape worshipers!
